Mouthguards

The health of your teeth and gums are of the utmost importance to us. At Scott Makiol Biodentistry, we strive to help you protect your smile and oral health at every age.

If you play sports, lead an active lifestyle or have a painful teeth grinding (bruxism) habit, a custom mouthguard may be a viable solution for you. At Scott Makiol Biodentistry, we create custom-fitted mouthguards to help protect your teeth and gums from damage and wear.

According to the Australian Dental Association (ADA), mouthguards can protect a person from serious injuries, such as broken jaws, fractured or cracked teeth, knocked-out teeth and cut lips or tongues.

How Do Custom Mouthguards Work?

A custom mouthguard absorbs shock and spreads the impact of a damaging blow. We fabricate it based on an impression of your teeth and jaws to ensure it fits snugly and comfortably.

Unlike an over-the-counter mouthguard, we specifically design our mouthguards to fit the contours of your unique smile. A custom mouthguard is also resilient, and it balances your bite and allows everyday speech and breathing. If your custom mouthguard is well maintained, stored and regularly checked by your dentist, it can last for many seasons.

Why Should I Wear a Custom-Fitted Mouthguard or Occlusal Splint?

At Scott Makiol Biodentistry, we help our patients understand the importance of a custom-fit mouthguard and occlusal splint, and why it’s essential to protect your teeth. Our custom mouthguards ensure comfort and stability, unrestricted breathing and the ability to speak clearly while sprinting down the field or running up the court.

An occlusal splint can preserve your natural teeth from undue pressure, damage and wear caused by bruxism. Whether you play sports or grind your teeth, Dr Scott and our team can help you find the treatment you need.

Wearing Your Custom Mouthguard

Many of our patients appreciate that they can comfortably breathe and speak while wearing their custom mouthguards. These mouthguards stay firmly in place so you can focus less on your teeth and more on the sport you love. The ADA states that a custom mouthguard is a part of mandatory sporting equipment, no matter a person’s age or level of experience.

Caring for Your Custom Mouthguard

To keep your mouthguard in excellent condition, please make sure to store it safely and keep it out of the sun. Wash it in cold water after every use and see your dentist for regular preventive appointments. Using hot water or exposing the mouthguard to heat can warp the shape and result in an ill-fitting and ineffective mouthguard.

Only dental professionals can design and fabricate effective custom mouthguards that provide adequate protection.
