Preventive Dentistry
Our oral health correlates with our body's overall health and wellness, a link which is often called the 'mouth-body connection.' At Brisbane Biodentistry, we believe preventive dentistry helps us quickly and accurately diagnose, treat, and prevent dental health concerns in our patients.
Preventive dentistry focuses on comprehensive dental hygiene, including an oral cancer review, a routine dental examination, cleaning and more to maintain the mouth and body's overall health. Without regular, professional dental care, proper oral hygiene and practising healthy dental habits, a person is more at risk of oral infections and may be more likely to experience dental decay or tooth loss, among other conditions.
Fortunately, with six monthly preventive care appointments our dedicated team help ensure you can enjoy your healthiest smile always!
What Is Preventive Dentistry?
Preventive dentistry maintains the teeth and gums and helps prevent dental issues occurring. In today's society, tooth extractions and dentures are becoming far less common due to good preventive dentistry. By practising regular dental hygiene you can keep your teeth throughout your lifetime, have a beautiful smile, eat comfortably and minimise the likelihood of dental problems occurring.
Prevention and Patient Education Are Essential
During your routine preventive care appointment at our Moorooka dental practice, we speak with you to learn more about you, your teeth and gums and your overall health. During your visit, we will also use our intra oral camera to clearly see everything the dentist describes, including damage to the teeth and signs that might indicate periodontal disease. This personalised approach helps us provide the best outcomes for our patients. We want to quickly repair any issues you may experience and deliver lifelong improved dental outcomes for you.
At Brisbane Biodentistry, we believe prevention is better than cure, and long-term dental care is better than preventable emergency treatments.
We also take the time to educate and guide our patients with how to care for their teeth and gums. Our chairside treatment room coordinators use visual aids, like our brushing buddy puppet Draco, to assist us with showing patients how to brush, floss and routinely maintain thorough oral hygiene.
The Importance of Maintaining Your Oral Health
Regular dental examinations and cleans are some of the best preventive dentistry techniques available. We monitor your teeth and gums during regular examinations to ensure they remain healthy and free of cavities and disease. Professional dental cleans are essential because they allow our team to remove plaque and bacteria buildup using specialised tools. Only a dental professional can thoroughly remove plaque and cavity-causing substances from your teeth.
When you visit us, we can look at your teeth using x-rays. This helps us to detect any problems that are only just starting to develop. The sooner we are able to identify a potential concern, the sooner we can begin any necessary treatment. When you look at your teeth in the mirror, they may look fine, but underlying issues may be at play. Identifying these concerns early can resolve them before our patient experiences pain or discomfort or requires invasive treatments.
With our holistic approach to dentistry, we believe the body works in harmony with the mouth. We recommend a healthy diet with plenty of whole foods to ensure that your oral health stays in optimal condition.

Frequently Asked Questions
A routine dental exam and clean typically takes 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your needs. However, some patients may need more or less time for an extensive exam or clean, especially if they have an issue that needs addressing, like decay or gingivitis.
What to Expect During a Routine Preventive Appointment
Your dentist will discuss your medical history, review any concerns you may have and discuss treatment options. Our goal is to help maintain your level of optimal oral health so you can enjoy a healthy, functional smile for a lifetime.
During your exam and clean, our dental practitioner will look at your teeth, gums, jaws, bite and oral tissues to monitor the growth and development. We also use dental x-rays to check for potential underlying issues.
Our dentists gently cleans your teeth to remove plaque and tartar from all the places your brush and floss can’t reach. We finish the clean by polishing your teeth, refreshing your smile.
Are You Ready to Arrange a Dental Clean?
At Brisbane Biodentistry, we recommend getting preventive appointments every six months. However, some patients may need them more frequently. If you need a dental clean or exam, we encourage you to contact us at your earliest convenience.
